The Dakota Access Pipeline: A case study on resistance

‘Not Afraid to Look’ sculpture by Charles Rencountre.

This paper focuses on the No Dakota Access Pipeline Protest (No DAPL) as a case study on resistance. It explores why the movement was able to garner such wide spread attention and inter(national) appeal. No DAPL’s core concerns, notably threats of water contamination and the desecration of sacred lands, as well as the fight against climate change and upholding indigenous sovereign rights are investigated. As well as the role of social media in amplifying the movement’s reach and fostering global solidarity both physically and virtually.
